How does fist combat work?

Steam lists block, dodge, and punch as the combat verbs. There is no weapon ladder — Mellow's fists are the entire kit. Fights switch to a first-person view with on-screen telegraphs.

The grammar is always tell → defend → punish. Open every bout with defense. Offense is a reward for correct reads. If a monster mixes feints, survive two full pattern loops before you optimize damage.

Clocky is the tutorial: he drops from wall camouflage after Doors.exe, says your time is over, and forces the first HEALTH / STAMINA duel. Details on Clocky.

Block vs dodge

Use whichever input the fight UI highlights — both exist to give you a defensive beat. Missing the tell and blocking late is worse than waiting one extra cycle. Audio wind-ups stack on visual poses; headphones help once.

What combat is not

Henry kitchen segments are hide / break line of sight — not stamina duels. Do not mash punch expecting DPS on chase threats. Henry covers LOS routing.

How do HEALTH and STAMINA work?

Release footage shows explicit HEALTH (survival) and STAMINA (offense budget) bars during FPS fights starting with Clocky. Greedy punch strings drain STAMINA and leave you unable to block the next tell.

Insert a defensive beat after every short punch string. If inputs feel ignored, you are in recovery or hitstun — stop clicking, watch the wind-up, re-enter the loop.

Death retries the current bout without wiping exploration progress in Act 1 hubs. Use deaths as free labs. Between fights, cool down with bedroom soccer or a safe Tip dialogue room if tilted.

Which fights should I learn first?

Order of operations for the full release: Clocky (tutorial) → generic fist enemies toward A Natural Brawler (15 defeats) → story bosses Trapezist, AI, Chameleon → optional avoid routes.

Clocky — Act 1 gate

Mandatory after Doors.exe. Teaches camouflage drop, "time is over" framing, and STAMINA discipline. No paired avoid trophy — winning is progression.

Trapezist — Fatal Performance vs Cut The Act

Trapeze / set-piece boss in mid-late release. Fatal Performance for defeating in battle. Cut The Act for avoiding the fight entirely — plan before you throw the first punch.

AI — System Override vs Short Circuit

System Override defeats the AI in battle. Short Circuit avoids battling the AI. Same encounter, opposite achievement intent — usually needs a deliberate route choice, not combat skill.

Chameleon — No Strings Attached vs Case Closed

No Strings Attached for defeating the Chameleon. Case Closed for avoiding the battle. Global unlock rates show avoid trophies rarer than kill trophies — do not autopilot.

FAQ

Can I gear up for combat?

No RPG weapon tree — timing is the build.

Do fights wipe progress?

Retries keep exploration; re-check key items after long death loops.

Who made Clocky?

Freelance Surgeon lore — he boasts about procedures and pets behind the walls. Characters.

15 enemies for Natural Brawler?

Includes standard fist fights across the release — not only the three named bosses.

What else should I keep in mind?

Split saves or playthroughs if you want both kill and avoid boss trophies — one save rarely gets both pairs.

Trapezist can feel QTE-adjacent; still obey tell → defend → punish rather than mashing.

Demo combat lessons transfer; release adds harder patterns and achievement forks demo lacks.

Chase rooms and boss rooms need different headspaces — do not practice punches during Henry hide segments.

Full checklist: achievements · full route: walkthrough.

How do I reach 15 defeats for A Natural Brawler?

A Natural Brawler (~0.1% day-one global) asks for 15 enemy defeats — a cumulative combat grind, not a single boss.

Count everything that uses the fist FPS template: Clocky, generic wall monsters, and any boss you choose to fight rather than avoid. Skipping Short Circuit / Case Closed / Cut The Act routes still leaves plenty of fodder fights if you explore.

Spread defeats across acts instead of farming one respawn — release routing makes backtracking natural after walls shift. Pair with Clocky warmup before marathon sessions.

Do not confuse Henry chases with defeat counts — chase segments are not DPS checks unless the UI switches to HEALTH/STAMINA.
